So I've just completed the Abhorsen Trilogy from Garth Nix. It's not bad considering it's from an Aussie writer (I kid I kid)
I do think he's kind of taken the easy way out; as in, the first book does stand on its own really well and leaves you wanting to find out what happens next, and the second book has some of the best scenes, but the third book is essentially Book 2 Part 2. Which isn't bad, but feels like we could have gotten more story. It's kind of cheating, in my opinion.
Speaking of Cheating, I picked up a copy of George R. R. (R. R. R. R. R.) Martin's 2nd Song of Ice and Fire book. In my previous post about the series I marvel that a book with 800 pages still didn't conclude any of the stories it introduced. Sequeldom ahoy.
While we're on the subject of Fantasy I saw the Golden Compass, which I enjoyed thoroughly. People I know say it wasn't that good and the people I saw it with only thought it was so so. I am sad for them because they haven't read the book. Reading the book then watching this movie greatly enhances the experience. It's like having the best bits read out to you by Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. It's a great book, and a good film, not the kind of film you'd buy on DVD and watch for ever and ever but I like it more than, say, the fellowship of the ring.
Right, trudging through fantasy stuff done. Let's get some sci-fi in.

You like Golden Compass better than FOTR?
O.O
SACRILEGE! HEATHEN!
Come on. We read the book before the movie, thankfully, else would not have appreciated much of the goings-ons in the movie.
