Test.
I have been accused of overly favoring a specific kind of music, i.e. deep-voiced females singing vocally driven lyric-focused songs.
Guilty as charged.
Her name is Emmy Rossum. You might know her from the films Day After Tomorrow and Phantom of the Opera (she's certainly very pretty. My brother comments she'd look better with straight hair, I'm on the fence.)
At first listen I was of the opinion that the song was, in my own words, overproduced, and somewhat derivative from artists like Imogen Heap and Enya, but, intrigued by the vocals and the sliding harmonies, I gave it a couple more listens. I'm not reviewing the music, so I'm not obligated to say nice things, but it's really not that bad. The girl likes Jem and David Gray, it shows.
I'm enjoying this trend of moving away from all the crap that is on our radios today. Rihanna, I'm looking at you. While Emmy Rossum may not be producing great art (she's 21, I don't suppose there'll be a Jewel everywhere) it's certainly much more pleasant to listen to than most of the stuff that's coming out.
I don't hate R&B specifically (although it is very much often the subject of my ire). I feel the genre is misrepresented heavily by artists like Fifty Cent and Missy Elliot; hip-hop as an artform began with the desire to rail against perceived oppressions. It was, essentially, formed on anger. Now it's about bling and bootay. Where's Eminem to rescue us from the slough? Bring on the verse.
Meanwhile, we have Ms. Rossum.
p.s. the video is really rather crappy. Such a shame, because the song is quite wonderful.
